Surgeons rate the Anzen™ Safety Scalpel “comparable to traditional scalpels” in weight and balance

[Part 3 in a series on product validation. See Part 2 here]

When designing a safety scalpel, the key challenge is to approximate the weight and feel of a traditional scalpel, so that surgeons will be comfortable and confident making the switch. In recent bench testing, each Anzen™ Safety Scalpel was measured, weighed, and balanced and then compared both to traditional scalpels and currently available safety scalpels. In each case, the Anzen™ scalpel much more closely matched the length, width, weight, and balance point of a traditional scalpel.

But the real proof is in a surgeons’ hands—which is why MediPurpose has been conducting surveys since 2015 to validate users’ perceptions of the product. Over the course of 2 years, surgeons have been surveyed from at least 20 different facilities, and asked to compare the weight and balance of the Anzen™ Safety Scalpel to that of a traditional scalpel.

Of 56 surgeons surveyed, 61% “agreed” or “strongly agreed” that in its open position (with the blade exposed), the Anzen™ scalpel has comparable weight and balance to a traditional scalpel. Only 20% “disagreed” or “strongly disagreed” and the rest of the surgeons neither agreed or disagreed.

These results add to our body of user feedback, echoing previous surveys in which surgeons, surgical techs, and nurses validated the product’s ease of use.
